Obstetrician Gynecologist, Dr. Surached Apininbongkode, Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital, said “For Thai women, cervical cancer is their number one killer. To prevent them from it, women who are at risk or women who are above 25 years old and have had sexual intercourse should have a screening test at least once a year. HPV, the source of cancer, can stay in our body without showing any symptoms. It takes 5 years to change from normal cells to abnormal cells, and 5 more years till those abnormal cells turn to cancer. If these abnormal cells are found early, we can decelerate the risk to of cervical cancer.”

Assistant Professor Dr. Pairoj Junyangdikul, Head of Pathology and HPV Center, Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital also added “Although the most precise method to test for HPV is the Pap Smear performed by an Obstetrician, the urinary HPV screening test is an alternative method suitable for women who are shy or embarrassed, and can get the test result within 3 days. However, this method is only the primary test. If there is an abnormal result, you will need other tests to be sure. So do not ignore your health. The cervical cancer can be prevented, simply get a screen test every year.”
