Acupuncture is the well-known process of having small, thin, flexible needles inserted into one’s skin to improve the flow of Qi, the vital energy that flows through our bodies according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupuncture, along with the use of traditional herbal remedies, has been practiced for thousands of years in China and is the most popular approach to treating illnesses in TCM. It is also a favored method of the holistic medicine community for its health promotion and sickness prevention capabilities. Often performed as an alternative to Western medical care, acupuncture aims to correct improperly flowing Qi by stimulating certain points on the body, and is used in the treatment of a wide variety of ailments including lower-back pain, osteoarthritis, depression, and even the nausea and malaise resulting from chemotherapy. Treatments involving acupuncture are safe and virtually painless. The sensation from the insertion of the needles is more like a tingling or numbness feeling than it is an uncomfortable or painful one.
